In this blog post, we will share essential information to help you better understand the local divorce court in Orlando, FL.
Orange County Courthouse
Family law cases are heard in the Orange County Courthouse, also called the Ninth Judicial Circuit Court of Florida. With 65 judges presiding, this court handles a staggering number of cases, with as many as 590,000 new cases filed annually.
When visiting the downtown Orange County Courthouse, look for the tallest building downtown along Orange Avenue. The building is a prominent landmark in Orlando. It’s crucial to arrive early to account for parking, security checks, and elevator wait times.
Parking
The downtown courthouse parking garage is conveniently located at the intersection of N. Orange Avenue and Amelia Street, with entrances on Amelia Street and Magnolia Avenue. Ensure you have cash, a personal check, or a debit/credit card for parking fees, typically around $2.00 per hour.
Security Procedures
Expect a winding line for public entrance security. Be prepared to remove your cell phone(s), keys, and other electronic items.
The following items are strictly prohibited:
- Firearms
- Aerosol cans
- Knives of any type
- Tools
- Handcuffs/handcuff keys
- Tape measures
- Scissors
- Clay or putty material
- Razors
- Glass perfume bottles over 4 oz
- Box cutters
- Chains
- Pepper spray
- Oversized belt buckles
After clearing security, you’ll find yourself in a grand oval-shaped room with an Information desk ahead. To the left is the area designated for Mediation and Alternate Dispute Resolution, and to the right is an escalator that goes up to the fourth floor.
Behind the Information booth are two elevators that reach the fourth floor, and behind these elevators are the main elevators taking you up to the 23rd floor. Remember that there may be lines for the main elevators, which serve most of the courthouse.
Navigating the Courthouse
All family law-related cases are typically handled on the 16th floor. The third floor houses services such as marriage licenses, the passport office, and the Injunction/Family Law office for filing paperwork or purchasing copies of documents.
Navigating Mediation in Orlando, Florida
The mediation process in Orlando’s family court services can be complex. To avoid complications, know the date, time, and location of your family court services mediation, which can be found on your legal pleadings. Being punctual is crucial, as arriving late or missing the mediation session can delay your case and upset the judge.
