Meet The Partners
Dorothy J. McMichen – Partner
As the senior partner, McMichen has the most publicly visible footprint, particularly in appellate court where decisions become public record.
Notable Appellate Work: She successfully represented the appellee in Ayala v. Gonzalez (2008) before the Florida Fifth District Court of Appeal. This was a highly litigated and contentious divorce case that went before the appellate court eleven times. McMichen not only won the appeal, but the court also sanctioned the opposing counsel for continuously filing inappropriate motions to reargue the case.
Board Certification: She is Board Certified in Marital and Family Law by the Florida Bar. This is a significant professional milestone that requires passing a rigorous exam, undergoing peer review by judges and other attorneys, and demonstrating extensive trial experience. Fewer than 1% of family law attorneys in Florida achieve this distinction.
Graduated in 1979 with a B.A. in Economics and Business from Chapman College in Anaheim, California. Graduated in May of 1983 with a Juris Doctor in Law from the Holland Law Center at the University of Florida. Admitted to the Florida Bar in October of 1983.
Melanie M. Demps – Partner
Melanie M. Demps has been a Family Law and divorce attorney since 2002 practicing in the area of marital and family law. After graduating from University of Central Florida, Ms. Demps attended Barry University School of Law in Orlando, Florida where she graduated Cum Laude.
Specialized Focus: Rather than public trial verdicts, Demps’ notable work is in Collaborative Family Law. Collaborative law is specifically designed to keep high-net-worth and complex divorces out of court and off the public record.
Court Appointments: She is frequently appointed by the court to serve as a Guardian ad Litem (representing the best interests of children in highly contested custody battles), which indicates a high level of trust from local family court judges.
Sonica Rhodes Cinami – Partner
Divorce Attorney, Sonica Cinami was admitted to the Florida Bar in 1996 and has practiced in the area of Marital and Family law since that time. Sonica joined the firm in 1998 and her practice is dedicated exclusively to Marital and Family law.
Mediation and Pro Bono Wins: She is a Florida Supreme Court Certified Family Law Mediator. Her notable career achievements lean heavily toward mediation and community service. She received the Law Firm Award of Merit from the Orange County Legal Aid Society for providing representation to qualifying community members.
She also has a background in federal law, having won the Judge Duberstein National Bankruptcy Moot Court Competition during her legal education and serving as a federal judicial intern before moving strictly into family law.
