Seven Reasons Couples Get Divorced
What are the most common reasons couples give for getting divorced? According to a study published in the journal Couple and Family Psychology, there were seven reasons that came up frequently regarding why couples split up.
Factors That Lead to Divorce
Lack of Commitment
Surprisingly, the most common reason was not infidelity but lack of commitment to the marriage. Whether it be one or both spouses, sometimes the commitment just isn’t there anymore. If the commitment to the marriage has faded, it will be a recipe for disaster on other fronts if not properly dealt with.
Infidelity
It didn’t make it to the number one most common reason, but infidelity was confirmed as one of the three next most frequent reasons. Some can move past it. For many, the betrayal is just too much. If the injured party can’t live with it, they may not be able to continue in the marriage.
Too Much Arguing
Arguing and disagreements are common in any marriage, especially as the glow from the newlywed years fades. But if the bickering becomes constant, it might be too much for a decent marriage to handle.
Marrying Too Young
The average age for marrying is about 25 for women and 28 for men. What happens if one or both of you are significantly younger than that? You might not have fulfilled your desired education or career goals. You put things on hold to marry and then years down the road regret settles in.
Even if there was no fault on the apart of the other spouse, you may feel incomplete. Sometimes that leads to the need to rebuild the life you put on hold and your spouse just can’t or won’t come along for the ride.
Money Troubles
Money is a reoccurring trouble spot for most couples. One may spend more than they should, or couples bicker over how money should be spent. When this becomes an endless struggle, it can do a decent marriage in.
One may feel resentful having to hold things afloat, while the other goes on endless spending sprees. Sometimes it all just becomes too much. Even when a spouse is unavoidably laid off or otherwise unable to work the tension from money problems can overwhelm a marriage.
Substance Abuse
Substance abuse is cited as one of the things that pushed things over the edge and made it impossible to continue in the marriage. There may be other things that come with substance abuse.
The spouse with the problem may grow distant and seem disconnected. Financial problems may arise as the spouse has employment problems and money gets used for a bad habit. Many problems may arise from addiction, but the big one for marriage is when the abusing spouse just can’t get clean.
Domestic Violence
Also, a last straw type problem. Substance abuse or mental illness may be present in the abuser. Regardless, there is never an excuse to physically or mentally abuse your spouse. If you are being abused please seek help with your local domestic violence organization, for more information please click here for the National Domestic Violence Hotline.
